“Hand-shaped steel stag beetle sculptures for Bristol Zoo. A matte black, weather-resistant installation celebrating Britain’s iconic beetle species.”
Commissioned for the Bristol Zoo, these hand-shaped steel sculptures celebrate one of Britain’s most spectacular—and threatened—insects. The stag beetle is known for its formidable mandibles and armour-like exoskeleton, features I aimed to emphasise through the raw strength of steel and a deep, matte black finish. As one of my earliest professional projects, this installation was designed to act as a permanent, weather-resistant landmark within the gardens, bringing the hidden world of wood-boring beetles into a larger-than-life perspective for visitors.
