The Dandelions Gate

Taraxacum officinale

A minimal, contemporary steel gate installation on Arley Hill, Bristol. Features abstract, sweeping dandelion forms that add a touch of organic softness to the streetscape.

Set within the residential streetscape of Arley Hill in Cotham, Bristol, this contemporary gate installation offers a delicate, organic focal point.

Moving away from my usual heavily textured wildlife realism, this piece explores a more minimal, graphic aesthetic. The design features abstract, simplified dandelion forms that are worked directly into the gate's structure rather than the surrounding railings. The smooth steel stems sweep upward from the base in graceful, overlapping curves, culminating in geometric, starburst-like seed heads.

By reducing the familiar plant to its essential shapes, the design remains a quiet, subtle reference rather than a literal interpretation. The flowing lines of the gate provide a striking visual contrast to the rigid, straight vertical bars of the adjacent boundary railings. It successfully adds a small moment of softness and character to the everyday streetscape without overwhelming its traditional stone setting.
