Narwhal

Monodon monoceros

A sleek, burnished stainless steel sculpture of a Narwhal, featuring a detailed spiral tusk. Commissioned by renowned polar wildlife cameraman Doug Allan OBE.

Commissioned for the private collection of renowned Scottish wildlife cameraman and polar expert Doug Allan OBE, this sculpture captures the sleek, ghostly presence of the Arctic's most mythical inhabitant: the Narwhal (Monodon monoceros).

Crafted from stainless steel, this piece relies on a completely different metalworking approach compared to my feathered or furred subjects. To capture the hydrodynamic form of the cetacean, the body is formed from smooth, rounded steel, finished with a subtle, burnished polish that evokes the feeling of wet skin and icy underwater lighting.

The creature is posed in a gentle, sweeping curve, its tail flukes raised as if caught mid-glide beneath the pack ice. The focal point of the piece is, of course, the narwhal's iconic tusk. Forged with a tight, anatomically accurate spiral, the tusk extends proudly from the head, contrasting its sharp, textured twist against the smooth, flowing lines of the animal's body.
