Manta Ray

Mobula birostris

A stainless steel sculpture of a Manta Ray. Features a smooth, burnished finish, anatomically accurate gill details, and a dynamic gliding posture.

The Manta Ray is the gentle giant of the seas, known for its immense wingspan and acrobatic feeding loops. This meter-wide sculpture captures the ray in a banking turn, evoking the feeling of weightlessness as it glides through the currents.

Crafted from stainless steel, this piece departs from my usual bead-welded textures to focus on smooth, sweeping lines. The body is formed from shaped steel plates, polished to a burnished finish that catches the light like wet skin breaking the surface of the ocean.

Attention to anatomical detail is paramount: the sculpture features the distinct cephalic fins (horns) used for funneling plankton, and a fully detailed underside revealing the gill slits and mouth cavity. The result is a piece that feels less like a static object and more like a frozen moment of underwater flight.
