Komodo Guardian

Varanus komodoensis

A life-sized steel Komodo Dragon sculpture climbing the home of Nigel Marven. This detailed piece captures the predatory grace and intelligence of the species.

The Komodo Dragon (Varanus komodoensis) is a survivor from a prehistoric era—the world's largest lizard, defined by its muscular frame and heightened sensory awareness. This life-sized sculpture, commissioned for the home of wildlife presenter Nigel Marven, captures the dragon mid-ascent. With its claws engaged in the masonry and its tongue flicking out to scent the air, the creature looks back over its shoulder, caught in a moment of sharp observation.

Nigel's extensive work filming these apex predators in the wild informed the sculpture's posture; it is a tribute to the animal's intelligence and power rather than a caricature of aggression. Assisted by stonemason Jock Campbell, the piece was installed to appear as though it is moving naturally across the architecture. Rendered in steel, the work highlights the dragon's rugged, armored skin, serving as a permanent reminder of the ancient natural world embedded within a modern setting.
