Jackdaw

Coloeus monedula

A highly detailed stainless steel sculpture of a Jackdaw. Featuring bead-welded textures and sleek layered flight feathers to capture the intelligent character of this garden bird.

Known for their striking pale-grey napes and intense, intelligent eyes, Jackdaws are among the most charismatic members of the crow family. This life-sized sculpture captures the bird in an alert, curious pose, as if pausing to inspect a potential treasure found in the garden.

Crafted from stainless steel, the piece uses a sophisticated blend of textures to represent the bird's unique plumage. The body is built from dense, irregular bead-welding, creating a rugged, light-catching surface that mimics the coarse feathers of the breast and belly. In contrast, the flight feathers and tail are formed from long, smooth, overlapping steel plates, providing a sleek and aerodynamic finish.

To capture the Jackdaw's character, I focused on the specific shape of the head and beak. The sculpture is finished with a dark, burnished patina that echoes the bird's charcoal-grey colouring while allowing the metallic glint of the stainless steel to shine through the "feather" edges.
