Heisenberg, The Monkey

Macaca nigra

The iconic "Heisenberg" macaque sculpture on Whiteladies Road. A Sulawesi Macaque holding a Rubik's Cube outside Canynge Hall, Bristol.

Perched on the boundary of Bristol University’s Canynge Hall, "Heisenberg" is a stainless steel rendition of a Sulawesi Crested Macaque (Macaca nigra). Nicknamed after the physicist Werner Heisenberg, the sculpture depicts this highly intelligent, critically endangered primate deep in thought, attempting to solve a Rubik’s Cube.

A long-standing fixture of Whiteladies Road, Heisenberg sits just before Clifton Down station and the shopping centre, where he has become a permanent part of the Bristol cityscape. His presence is designed to offer a moment of levity to the daily commute, bringing a smile to passersby and students alike. The choice of stainless steel provides a sharp, reflective contrast to the surrounding stone architecture, ensuring this clever "local" continues to brighten the street for years to come.
