“Indoor stainless steel sculptures of a squid and a ray. Created for the stairwell portholes at King's Forest Primary School to inspire students.”
Continuing the immersive, educational theme established by the school's "Wild Gate," these indoor installations greet students as they reach the second-floor stairwells of King's Forest Primary School.
Housed within circular wall cutouts that cleverly mimic submarine portholes, these bespoke stainless steel sculptures transform a standard architectural transition into a deep-sea discovery. The installation features two distinct marine studies:
The Squid: Suspended vertically within its frame, this piece features a textured, elongated mantle, a prominent eye, and trailing tentacles. It is perfectly framed by two sweeping fronds of stylised kelp that follow the curve of the porthole.
The Ray: Captured in a dynamic, banking turn, this ray showcases smooth, highly reflective pectoral fins that suggest effortless gliding. It is mounted on a rugged, textured piece of stylised coral or driftwood, highlighting the contrast in metal finishes.
By integrating these pieces directly into the fabric of the building, the artwork encourages daily curiosity and brings a sense of quiet wonder to the journey between classrooms.
